The Kids Network (pt.1)

What is the Kids network?

The kids network is a charity that offers 1–1 mentoring program for children (especially for disadvantaged children) with an adult. It is built with the mission to create new meaningful community connections through mentoring to increase wellbeing and resilience for positive futures. The program requires at least 12-months of commitment, where you’ll spend at least 1–2 hours a week with your match.

How does it work?

The charity works closely with primary schools to identify children who wish to receive support. The mentoring program meant to support these children’s crucial stage, for example, the transition to secondary school. The school will run internal assessments and get consent from parents to see if they think the program would benefit their children.

On the other hand, the organisations actively recruit, run assessment, screen and train volunteers (mentors), and then match them with children that closely match their personality.

Once you got matched with a child, together with him/her, you’ll run a weekly session. Each session involves a variety of activities focusing on the needs and wants of the children. It can be a goal-setting session, games, a tour to the museum or just a meal together.

What got me interested with The Kids Network?

I strongly believe in the cause of TKN and the team behind it. It is because it matches what I needed growing up. I have my fair share of a story about being brought up by single-mum.

Children are stressed, depressed, anxious and angry, and it affects the disadvantaged disproportionally. Sometimes they need someone to talk to, share stories with, someone that can guide them or tell them that everything is okay or even just someone to spend some time out of the house.

The best part of this, you are not just paying it forward to the society, bring the inner child in you, you’ll also learn and discover a lot about yourself.

Interested in making an impact? You can apply to be a mentor here.

Can’t commit your time? You can contribute monetarily instead to the charity to continuously make an impact on these children’s lives.
